Roy Higgins

Roy Henry Higgins MBE (born June 5, 1938 in Koondrook, Victoria) was an Australian jockey who competed in the late 1960s and the 1970s. growing up in the town of Deniliquin, New South Wales, he trained under local horse trainer Jim Watters and earned the nickname of `the professor` due to his talent in the saddle. Roy Higgins had a constant battle with his weight, but was still able to win almost every major race on the Australian calendar.

Amongst the horses he was associated with are Gunsynd, Leilani, Storm Queen and Big Philou, and he achieved immortality by winning the Melbourne Cup twice on Light Fingers in 1965 and Red Handed in 1967 under the guidance of trainer Bart Cummings.

Higgins announced his retirement from riding in 1983, saying his goal was "to be a little fat man." He has continued to work as a racing analyst for television and radio, especially on Melbourne radio. Additionally, he teaches at the Northern Lodge Training Centre of the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE`s jockey training programme.
